A recent study suggests that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such medications must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
