From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a diverse cast of personalities, and a exciting storyline featuring angels, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in influence within Dol-Makjar.
Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season follow below.
The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced
The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to begin their own adventure, separate from the remaining groups.
The combat-focused team features Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).
The Reason for Division
Given an extensive roster, it was evident from the start that keeping everyone at the same party would be impossible.
This explains, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before dividing into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Strategists, and Seekers.
The Nature of the Soldiers Table
According to the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for participants who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.
Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer the cleric might appear mismatched, but the events of episode 3 make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the warrior group.
Motivations for Departure
First, the group knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal initial meeting with the antagonists.
Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—manipulated the foes for his personal gain, entering Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting the rogue, and taking all the powerful objects to auction.
Casimir then cleared his obligations and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the urban center, with Teor’s brother close behind.
Character Drivers
Moreover, each character has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:
- Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, seeks revenge.
- The knowledgeable figure has experience in the northern area and advises that it is a dangerous environment.
- The strong character and The healer, having defied his relatives’ demands to eliminate the target and instead saved him, have no other options.
- But, their status as key figures in the influential clan could help the group access places they normally couldn’t.
- Furthermore, The grateful character pledged a life debt to The cleric for his deliverance and will now follow him wherever.
Pursued by Authorities
Finally, all of them are sought by the powers that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:
- Thimble and The hero are notorious outlaws.
- The warrior and Wicander betrayed the powerful family and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
- Teor is marked for death by House Halovar.
This means them little choice but to journey toward the northern region in search of the traitor.
Upcoming Developments
From the recent installment’s Cooldown, we find out that the combat party will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the participants to assemble the Questers and Strategists tables.
